art_smallFall is officially here in Boulder, Colorado. In fact, we had our first hard frost (the overnight low was 29 degrees Fahrenheit) on October 4th, pretty much right on schedule, as our fifty year average is October 6th. As we told you in our last newsletter, we have been planning for a late October harvest for our next release. We are right on track to release Software Update 7.5 in late October and have a Beta version of the new features available NOW. If you would like to get a sneak peek at the new features, learn more below about how to get involved in our 7.4 RTR Beta Test.

We love it when we hear back from you – so if you have a story you would like to share with us of how we have helped you, let us know. Email me directly at art@apconnections.net. I would love to hear from you!

Last month we asked for folks to let us know if they would be interested in hosting our next Technical Seminar. We had several people step forward (thank you all!), and from that group, have decided to hold our 2013 Fall Technical Seminar in Michigan.

We think Michigan will be a great place to visit in the fall, are are excited to see the NetEqualizer in action at Western Michigan, a longtime customer who has been using NetEqualizers since early 2008.

If you have any questions regarding the Technical Seminar, contact us at:

sales@apconnections.net

We hope to see you there!

NetEqualizer Caching Investment

We have recently partnered with some of the Squid core development team to harden and make our caching the best it can be!

Recent testing with enhancements are showing even better hit ratios for YouTube and other media, resulting in a better caching system for our customers.

The NetEqualizer Caching Option (NCO) is available as an add-on to NetEqualizer systems at additional cost. Caching helps supplement the power of Equalizing by storing high-bandwidth streams locally for internal users. For more information on NCO, click here.If you are interested in adding caching to your system, contact us at:

Planning for 2014: Do You Need to Secure Your Web Applications?

As we near the end of 2013, many of you may be putting together your 2014 plans.netgladiator_logo If web application security is on your “must have” list for 2014, you might want to take a look at our sister product, the NetGladiator.

We used NetEqualizer’s guiding principles when we developed the NetGladiator: keep it affordable (starting at $3,500 USD), make sure it is easy to set up and maintain, and implement security rules that provide value and make sense without the overkill of most products.

If you would like to learn more, visit our website, take a look at our white paper, or contact us at:

RTR Release and Beta Testing!

We are very excited to announce the release of our new Real-Time Reporting (RTR) tool features!

Here are all the cool new reports/features that you will see in Software Update 7.4 (as well as our Beta version):

The first major enhancement you will see is the ability to look at graphs of all traffic going through the NetEqualizer.

This graph will show you your equalizing ratio and when traffic peaked above that threshold as well as minimum and maximum outputs in the given time frame. This will really help you see how often and when traffic is being Equalized from an historical perspective.

totaltraffic

The other new features revolve around being able to run reports on each IP in your Active Connections table.

Instead of a static table, you will now see links associated with each IP address.
ip

Click the desired IP address to bring up the reporting interface.

report

From here, you can do a number of tasks:

1) Look at historical graphs of traffic to and from the given IP address.

ipgraph

2) Look up the country associated with the IP address.
3) Do an NS Lookup of the IP address to see what name server it is associated with.
4) Show all rules for an IP – this interface shows you what rules currently affect the given IP (hard limits, pools, connection limits, etc.).

allrules

We are currently in Beta on new RTR Features (7.4 Release with RTR Beta), and would like several more customer participants. If you are interested, please email us at:

sales@apconnections.net

so we can see if you are a good fit for the Beta version. We plan to release the new RTR functionality to all customers as Software Update 7.5 in late October.

If you are interested in participating, you need to be current on NSS, and either be on the 7.4 release currently or be willing to upgrade to it. Once on 7.4, we will give you a hot fix to install the new RTR capabilities.

Using OpenDNS on Your Wireless Network to Prevent DMCA Infringements

By Sam Beskur – CTO – Global Gossip

Editor’s Note: APconnections and Global Gossip have partnered to offer a joint hotel service solution, HMSIO. Read our HMSIO service offering datasheet to learn more.

Traffic Filtering with OpenDNS

Abstract
AUP (Acceptable Use Policy) violations which include DMCA infringements on illegal downloads (P2P, Usenet or otherwise) have been hugely troublesome in many locations where we provide public access WiFi. Nearly all major carriers here in the US now have some form of notification system to alert customers when violation occur and the once that don’t send notifications are silently tracking this behavior…

IMG_0884This year, fall is coming slowly to Boulder, Colorado. In late August, we were experiencing several weeks of 90 degree+ (F) weather – which is great for my backyard garden tomatoes and peppers, so at least that’s a benefit. But I am ready for some cooler fall temperatures. On that note, our 2013 Fall Release is almost ready, and we plan for a late October harvest complete with lots of new features!

We love it when we hear back from you – so if you have a story you would like to share with us of how we have helped you, let us know. Email me directly at art@apconnections.net. I would love to hear from you!

Wanted: Tech Seminar Location

We are looking for a host for our next seminar! Possible locations are not limited to the United States and anyone across the world willing to have this half day event should not hesitate to contact us!neteq seminar logo with border

The seminar brings our CTO, Art Reisman, directly to you. In this presentation, Art explores the NetEqualizer technology in detail, and answers your technical questions. So, whether you are an existing customer or just starting to think about bandwidth shaping, come learn more about the NetEqualizer technology and share your experiences with other customers. Remember – this is not a marketing presentation; it was created by techies, for techies!

Update on 2013 Fall Release

Our Fall Release is almost ready and we’ve selected the final features that will be implemented in the release. They are:

* Show All Rules for an IP – easily see which rules apply to a given IP for quick troubleshooting and reporting.

* Network Load Graph – a simplified version of the ntop load graph so you can see bandwidth usage over time.

* NSLookup Capability – do an NSLookup of any IP address in your active connections. If your organization uses dynamic DNS, this is the feature for you.

Each feature helps enhance our Dynamic Real-Time Reporting tool (RTR) and we are excited to continue improving this interface. We’d love to hear your ideas on what else could be included (either new features for the GUI or ntop features you’d like to see incorporated into our reporting tool). Screen Shot 2013-09-09 at 2.44.26 PM

Our last feature listed (NSLookup Capability) was a request by NetEqualizer customer James Watson – Director of Technology Services at Spring Independent School District. Thanks James!

This summer we asked for your input on new features and we received a lot of great ideas. We’d like to thank all of the people who sent us suggestions. We’ll certainly keep those around and try to incorporate them into future releases!

Our Fall Release will be free to customers with valid NetEqualizer Software and Support who are running 7.0+. If you are not current with NSS, contact us today!

Next up – a new main page which will include our new look and feel. We will roll out the changes this fall with an updated site to be live by January 2014.

Look for that in an upcoming newsletter!

Leasing Program a BIG Hit

In July we announced our new NetEqualizer Leasing Program, and since it went live we have seen a great adoption rate. We are getting feedback that the program is working well for folks that need to align monthly expenditures with a monthly revenue steam – models commonly used by Business Centers and Internet Service Providers (for example).

If you are a business owner in either of these verticals, you should check out our Leasing Program to see if it meets your needs.

Local Linux Club Talk

If was not for the Linux community, and all the early adopters who trialed our very early NetEqualizer (raw versions) – numbering 10’s of thousands – there would likely be no NetEqualizer alternative in the traffic shaping space.

The cost structure to market a boot-strapped company would otherwise require VC money and our price points would be 3 to 4 times as much to recoup their investments.

The Clue Denver group is one of the most active Linux user groups in the country and we have recently been scheduled to speak at one of their upcoming meetings! We can’t wait to go back and speak to them and get some of their ideas on future products!

Check out their meeting calendar and if you are in the Denver, CO area, stop on by!

Who is Your Customer?

By Art Reisman – CTO – APconnections

My morning ritual involves stopping in at my Local Grocery Store for  a cup of coffee at their branded coffee stand. Sometimes I also pick up a few grocery items before heading into the office. At this particular King Soopers, before 7:00 am, they don’t have any checkout lanes open. My only option is the automated line. The automated lanes are great when you have  one or two standard coded items, but every once in a while I forget the rules, and make the mistake. Never buy an un-coded bakery item, or some produce that the scanner does not know how to handle, doing so can make you the laughing stock of the store. The employees will huddle in the back room giggling at you on the security camera as you paw through endless menu options for a muffin that does not exist in the system.

This morning my first clue that something was amiss was that there were two check lanes open with attendants and baggers. All this at 6:45 in the morning. I also noticed somebody under the fresh flowers scrubbing the crud off the wood floor where the moisture seeps, two people organizing carts, and some strange men in suits huddling around the demo food vendors. Wait a second, demo food vendors at 6:45 in the morning?

“So is the CEO coming into the store today”, I asked the attendant who was dressed in some newly printed shirt, scrawled with a Dilbert slogan about customer service.” No not the CEO – he was here last week – today, we have the Vice President of sales visiting,” she replied…

art_smallEvery now and then I get a chance to get out in the field to talk to customers.  Recently I had a chance to work on an installation in Finland for their high-speed train system. It was great to get out of the office and also to immerse myself in another culture. I get to see firsthand what customers are looking for from us, and how they use our products to solve their problems.

Let me know if you use our products in a creative or unique way, or if you have a network issue you would like solved! I like to hear about your most challenging problems.

The Power of the Real-Time Reporting Tool

Over the last month we’ve been refining our Real-Time Reporting (RTR) tool that is included in all installations running Software Update 7.0+. The RTR tool analyzes and reports on current traffic in real time surrounding two major features:

* Pools
* Active Connections

top10

The reporting associated with each of these features is much improved and more interactive than that of the standard View Active Connections report. Here are just some of the things you can do:

* View a dashboard of all your active pools and how much usage they are currently experiencing.
* Filter your Active Connections table by IP.
* Look up the country code associated with an IP address.
* See a total of bandwidth usage for a particular IP address for both up and down connections.
* Sort your Active Connections table by any column.
* See a top 10 offenders list which shows the IP addresses currently using the most bandwidth.
* Display the current status of all penalized connections. Use this interface to filter penalties based on IP and see whether a connection is being penalized.
* And more!

To access RTR on your NetEqualizer, go to the dashboard and click the “Dynamic RTR” icon at the top.

dynamicrtr

We are always brainstorming and adding features to RTR. If you have ideas on how RTR could be improved, please email us!

RTR is free to customers with valid NetEqualizer Software and Support who have systems capable of running 7.0+. If you are not current with NSS or have questions about your current unit, contact us today!

Software Update 7.3 Released

We recently released Software Update 7.3c.  We recommend that you take this upgrade if either of the following apply to you:

* If you are running 7.0+ with sustained loads of >=250Mbps.  We have fixed a has table issue that appeared at high volumes under intense sustained loads.
* If you are using our RTR on 7.1 and would like to use the Chrome or Safari browse, we have now fixed the issue that was causing these browsers not to work well with RTR.  We have also sped up the Active Connections and Top 10 reports.

Fall 2013 Release Planning

Our fall release planning continues! We anticipate a release for the late October/early November time frame. Look for further enhancements to our Real-Time Reporting (RTR), including a new VLAN report, additional Pools reporting, more information on penalties, and expanded caching ability for more types of files and video.

We also plan GUI updates to the following:

* Show all rules for an IP – be able to look up all associated rules for a given IP or subnet.
* Choose units for dashboard display – multiple options for bandwidth units beyond bytes/sec.
* See the top 10 offenders – this is already a feature in our Real-Time Reporting tool, but it will soon be available to all.
* Priority by whois – Give priority to connections based on a whois lookup of their IP.
* And more!

We are finalized content in the next several weeks. If you have an idea for us on what you would like to see, email sales@apconnections.net with your idea.

These features will be free to customers with valid NetEqualizer Software and Support. If you are not current with NSS, contact us today!

Is a Balloon Based Internet Service a Threat to Traditional Cable and DSL?

By Art Reisman – CTO – APconnections

I recently read an article regarding Google’s foray into balloon based Internet services.

This intriguing idea sparked a discussion with some of the engineers at a major satellite internet provider on the same subject. They, as well as myself, were somewhat skeptical at the feasibility of this balloon idea. Could we be wrong? Obviously, there are some unconventional obstacles with bouncing Internet signals off balloons, but what if those obstacles could be economically overcome?

First lets look at the practicalities of using balloons to beam Internet signals from ground based stations to consumers.

Advantages over satellite service

Latency

Satellite Internet, the kind used by Wild Blue, usually comes with a minimum of a 1 second delay, sometimes more. The bulk of this signal delay is due to the distance required for a stationary satellite, 22,000 miles…

NetEqualizer News: July 2013

July 2013

Greetings!

Enjoy another issue of NetEqualizer News! This month, we discuss our new NetEqualizer Leasing Program and talk about improvements to both our GUI and our Dynamic Real-Time Reporting tool. As always, feel free to pass this along to others who might be interested in NetEqualizer News.

A message from Art…
Art Reisman, CTO – APconnections

I have been focused on technical projects lately, such as our 64-bit release, art_smallour new Dynamic Real-Time Reporting, and also some improvements in our NetEqualizer Caching Option (NCO). While taking a break from thinking about technology, I became involved in a leasing deal for a customer acquiring a NetEqualizer, and thought – we can do that better!

So… this month we are introducing the NetEqualizer Leasing Program, offered directly from APconnections on a trial basis. If you find this of value, we will keep this program around. Leasing gives you another way to manage your cash flow and capital expenditures, so that you can solve your network congestion issues with a NetEqualizer today.

Lease a NetEqualizer!

We are happy to announce a brand new way to get all the benefits a NetEqualizer can provide without having to front the initial cost: the NetEqualizer Leasing Program!

How it workslease

NetEqualizer offers three leasing programs which vary based on the number of users in your network. Each program has an associated monthly fee that includes licensing, software updates, and support. Here are the prices of the three programs:

Small (less than 300 users): $300/mo.
Medium (300 to 1000 users): $450/mo.
Large (more than 1000 users): $750/mo.

Lessees can cancel at anytime provided the unit is in good condition once it is sent back.

This is a great way to get a NetEqualizer into your network for a low monthly fee and very little money upfront.

For complete details, take a look at our Leasing Program Agreement here. There is also information located on our How to Buy page.

If you have any questions about our NetEqualizer Leasing Program, contact us today at:

QoS Over the Internet: Is it Possible? Five Must-Know Facts

By Art Reisman – CTO – APconnections

I had an inquiry from a potential customer yesterday asking if we could monitor their QoS. I was a bit miffed as to what to tell them. At first, the question struck me as if they’d asked if we can monitor electrons on their power grid. In other words, it was a legitimate question in a sense, but of what use would it be to monitor QoS? I then asked him why he had implemented QoS in the first place. How did he know he needed it?

After inquiring a bit deeper, I also found out this customer was using extensive VPNs to remote offices over DSL internet circuits. His WAN traffic from the remote offices was sharing links with regular Internet data traffic, and all of it was traversing the public Internet. Then it hit me – he did not realize his QoS mechanisms were useless outside of his internal network…

Art Reisman, CTO – APconnections

Ten years ago this summer I was feverishly developing the original DPI version of the NetEqualizer, and gettingNetEQ_story_icon ready to release it to customers. It is both humbling and gratifying to be a part of growing my big idea into the company that we are today. If you want to see into the mind of an entrepreneur during start up, you can read all about my journey and how the technology was developed in “The Story of NetEqualizer”, available as a PDF or eBook.

Software Update 7.1: Dynamic Real-Time Reporting is Here!

We are excited to announce that our built-in version of the Dynamic Real-Time Reporting (RTR) tool is ready for release to all customers on Software Update 7.0+!

One of the things that differentiates the NetEqualizer from other monitoring and shaping tools is that we have the actual data for every user accurately updated by the second.

The reporting tools on most other devices tend to slog along and show you aggregate usage of 5 minute averages. Even the charge back mechanisms that ISPs use to figure out if you are over your allotted bandwidth do 95th percentile sampling – meaning they estimate your usage from sporadic sampling.

One thing we have not been good at, until now, is making this wealth of real data available to the end user in a nice organized usable presentation.

As of this week that is going to change.

In our 7.1 Software Update we have upgraded to a more robust Apache Web server shipping with every system. This has allowed us to take some of real time data and offer the administrator some nicer tools. For example, you can:

– View active connections running through your NetEqualizer and search or sort them however you like.
– Figure out the country associated with a specific IP address.
– View the top 10 flows running through your network – those that are using the most bandwidth.

top10

– View the state of all currently penalized flows. See which flows are newly penalized, which have had their penalties increased, and which have had their penalties decreased.

flows

– View, search and sort all running processes to easily spot problems with your device.

Stay tuned to NetEqualizer News for updates on new features!

The RTR tool is free to customers with valid NetEqualizer Software and Support who are running version 7.0+. If you are not current with NSS, contact us today!

10 Year Anniversary Celebration – All Summer Long!

We are celebrating 10 years in business this summer, thanks to you, our loyal customers! Our first NetEqualizer sale was a CD version, way back on July 13th, 2003. We have come a long way since then. We have rolled out NetEqualizer appliances to offer a consistent, standard, supportable framework to make it easy for you to own and operate your NetEqualizer.APconnections 10 Year Celebration

We have built out our core technology, equalizing behavior-based shaping, and added tons of features along the way – such as our Professional Quota API, CALEA, the NetEqualizer Caching Option (NCO), NetEqualizer Directory Integration (NDI), and a new GUI – just to name a few.

And we have leaped into the web application security world, introducing our NetGladiator IPS appliances last year.

Thousands of installations later, NetEqualizers are deployed across six (6) continents in small and large businesses, universities, schools, libraries, and internet providers.

So, as part of our 10 Year Celebration, we will be donating $25 to one of four charities of the buyer’s choice for each unit sold from now until August 31, 2013. The charities are:

It has been 4 years since the most recent round of CALEA laws took effect. At the time, our phones rang off the hook for several days with calls from various small ISPs worrying that they were going to be shut down if they did not invest in a large expensive CALEA compliant device.

Implementation of the law was open to interpretation.

Confusion over what CALEA was, stemmed from the fact that the CALEA laws themselves do not contain a technical specification. In essence, they are just laws. Suppose the Harvard Law school became the front end design team for all projects in Harvard’s engineering school. Lawyers write laws,  not engineering specifications. And so it was with CALEA, congress wrote a well intended law, but the implementation and enforcement part had to be interpreted. The FBI took the lead and wrote an extremely detailed specification as to what they wanted. The specification covered every scenario possible and thus the scope was costly to implement. Vendors willingly took the complex FBI specification to heart as part of the actual law, and built out high dollar CALEA certified devices. As vendors will do, their sales teams ran with it as gospel and spread fear in order to sell expensive equipment with large margins. Fortunately calmness prevailed at some point, and the FBI consultants worked with us and some of the smaller ISPs on a reasonable scaled down version of their CALEA requirements.

Ironically, even the current law has now become problematic for the FBI and they are requesting additional requirements.

The complexity of implementing the new CALEA laws are a reflection of the way we communicate with the Internet.

Prior to the Internet, the wire tap precedent for old phone systems was much simpler to implement. And, I suspect this simplicity played a role in the surprise confusion implementing an updated law. Historically a wire tap was just a matter of arriving at the central office with a search warrant and a tapping device, a wire splice, then listening in on a customer phone call. The transition of the law to implementation was fairly obvious…

art_smallIn May, my thoughts turn to the BolderBoulder, a large 10K running race that I compete in each year. The race has 50,000+ participants, and is split into two, a “people’s race” and  a “professionals race” (International Team Challenge). I compete first and then watch the professionals race, which is usually won by someone from Ethiopia or Kenya, as professionals fly in from all over the world for this race. By May my goal is always to train hard, so that I am at my peak performance on Memorial Day for the run. I work hard to get ready, and plan to run a personal best this year!

NetEqualizer Featured Customer

Every so often, NetEqualizer News features a customer who has benefited greatly from our technology and has told us about it!

This month, we feature Gordon College, and Russ Leathe, Director of Network and Computing Services. Here is what Russ had to say about his experience with NetEqualizer:

“We had an incident over the weekend I wanted to tell you about:
gordon_collegeOne of our web servers got hit with a ‘zero-day’ malware. We noticed our bandwidth was completely pegged even though our student population was on, or leaving for Spring-Break (so our bandwidth consumption should have been trending downwards, not upwards). We maintain over 100 servers, 95% of which are in a VM environment. Needless to say, finding the exposed culprit would be like finding the proverbial “needle in a haystack”.Alas, NetEQ to the rescue.
We used NTOP to discover our ‘Top Talkers’.  The Inbound bandwidth was saturated, which was unusual and we pinpointed it to one machine. We quickly wrote a bandwidth rule for that web-server and things returned to normal.
We found the malware and inoculated the server…all within an hour’s time. Normally, this could have taken hours or a few days.

Thanks again… for creating such a great solution for Higher ED!!”

Thanks Russ!

You Heard it Here First, Our Prediction on How Video Will Evolve to Conserve Bandwidth

By Art Reisman – CTO – APconnections

Editors Note:

I suspect somebody out there has already thought of this, but in my quick Internet search I could not find any references to this specific idea, so I am taking journalistic first claim and unofficial first rights to this idea.

The best example I think of to exemplify efficiency in video, are the old style cartoons,  such as the parody of South Park. If you ever watch South Park animation, the production quality is done deliberately cheesy – very few moving parts with fixed backgrounds. In the South Park case, the intention was obviously not to save production costs. The cheap animation is part of the comedy. That was not always the case, the evolution of this sort of stop animation cartoon was from the early days before computer animation took over the work of human artists working frame by frame. The fewer moving parts in a scene, the less work for the animator. They could re-use existing drawings of a figure and just change the orientation of the mouth in perhaps three positions to animate talking.

Modern video compression tries to take advantage of some of the inherit static data from image to image , such that, each new frame is transmitted with less information.  At best, this is a hit or miss proposition.  There are likely many frivolous moving parts in a back ground that perhaps on the small screen of hand held device are not necessary.

My prediction is we will soon see a collaboration between production of video and Internet transport providers that allows for the average small device video production to have a much smaller footprint in transit.

Some of the basics of this technique would involve…

NetEqualizer Directory Integration FAQ

Editor’s Note: This month, we announced the availability of the NetEqualizer Directory Integration (NDI) feature. Over the past few weeks, interest and inquiries have been high, so we’ve created the following Q&A to address many of the common questions we’ve received.

What is NDI anyway?
NetEqualizer Directory Integration (NDI) is an API for NetEqualizer that allows you to pull in username information from a directory and display it in your active connections table. This way, instead of only seeing IP to IP connection information, you can see usernames associated with those IPs so that you can make better decisions about how to manage your bandwidth. We will gradually be expanding NDI functionality to allow for shaping by username.

How much does NDI cost?
NDI requires setup consultation and is an additional add-on feature for the NetEqualizer. Currently, version 7.0 is required to run NDI. Take a look at our price list for more information.

How does NDI work?
NDI is an API on NetEqualizer that sends your directory server a URL containing an IP address. The process on your directory server then looks up the username for that IP and returns it to the NetEqualizer which stores the information.

What am I responsible for implementing with NDI?
You are responsible for implementing the process which resides on the directory server. This process returns a username when given an IP by the NDI API call. We have examples of how to do this for some directory server setups, but directory server setups are too specific for us to create a generic process that will work for all customers.

When would knowing the username be helpful?
Knowing the username instead of simply IP-to-IP information can helpful for administrators in many ways. Here are just a few:
– Easily see which users are taking up a lot of bandwidth. This is doable with a manual look up but that can get tedious.
– Eventually, NDI will be enhanced to shape by username. Again, this helps take away a step that an administrator would have to perform manually.
– Often, users are not assigned static IP addresses. With NDI’s dynamic updating, you don’t have to worry about the IP anymore. The username information will automatically adjust.

What are the upcoming enhancements to NDI?
We are planning to make NDI more robust in the months ahead. Our first feature will be Quotas by Username. This feature is currently in Beta. Once this feature is implemented, you will be able to assign usage quotas by username as opposed to IP or subnet. Additional possible changes to NDI include shaping by username and limiting by username. Stay tuned to NetEqualizer News for announcements.

If you have additional questions about NDI, feel free to contact us at: sales@apconnections.net!

APconnections Enhances NetEqualizer with Directory Integration Capability

LAFAYETTE, Colo.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–APconnections, an innovation-driven technology company that delivers best-in-class network traffic management solutions, is excited to announce NetEqualizer Directory Integration (NDI), as part of our 7.0 Release for the NetEqualizer product line.

NetEqualizer Directory Integration provides enhanced reporting for our customers. Our customers can identify the actual users consuming their valuable network bandwidth, so that they can react accordingly. I envision username identification to be incorporated into many areas in the future.
Art Reisman
NetEqualizer Co-Founder and CTO

NetEqualizer Directory Integration marks the advent of username reporting within the NetEqualizer. With the capabilities offered by NDI, customers can now report on network activity in even more meaningful ways, tracking usage based on known usernames. In the 7.0 Release, we have added username to real-time activity data and quota usage. Our Internet Provider customers will be excited to learn that we have extended this capability to Named Quotas, capturing username on network bandwidth usage over defined time periods. For more details on the 7.0 Release, see our Software Updates.

The NetEqualizer is affordably priced and is available in license levels from 20Mbps ($3,400) to 5Gbps ($13,100) on networks up to 40,000 users. See our NetEqualizer Price List for complete details. One year renewable NetEqualizer Software & Support (NSS) and NetEqualizer Hardware Warranties (NHW) are offered.

NetEqualizer bandwidth shapers utilize our unique behavior-based “equalizing” technology, which implement fairness algorithms to automatically provide bandwidth shaping and traffic control to your network. Immediately you will see higher QoS and optimal network performance, all while reducing maintenance and customer complaints. Equalizing gives priority to latency-sensitive applications, such as VoIP, web browsing, chat and e-mail over large file downloads and video that can clog your Internet pipe.

About APconnections: APconnections is based in Lafayette, Colorado, USA. We released our first commercial offering in July 2003. Today, our flexible, scalable, and affordable solutions can be found in over 4,000 installations in many types of public and private organizations of all sizes across the globe, including: Fortune 500 companies, major universities, K-12 schools, and Internet providers on six (6) continents. art_smallSpring has sprung! As I write this today, it is raining in Colorado, which is great for my garden. Grass is greening up here, and soon everything will be budding out or in bloom. Just like our spring release, Software Update 7.0, which is now ready! We talk more about the release, and how to get it, in this month’s newsletter.

And with April Fool’s Day just past, I got a little creative and updated a Beatles song with a NetEqualizer spin. Check it out below. It is featured as our “Poem Of The Month”.

7.0 Software Update: NDI and 64-Bit Release

We recently released our latest NetEqualizer Software Update, further improving our existing technology. The update from 6.0b to 7.0 has the following enhancements:

NetEqualizer Directory Integration (NDI)

Level 1
Level 1 of NDI is now GA. This version allows you to view directory user names in the Active Connections table so that you can associate each connection with a particular user.

ad

Level 2
Level 2 of NDI is now in beta testing. This version allows you to view directory user names in quotas and set quota restrictions for users based on directory user name.

quotas

NDI requires a one-time setup fee of $1,000. This includes activation and setup of the NetEqualizer to prepare for incoming directory results via our API. Because each directory implementation varies drastically, gathering the required information on the directory side will require some development work.

64-Bit Processing

As part of our commitment to keeping our product supported on the latest hardware, we have upgraded our Linux kernel and re-certified the NetEqualizer software.

This kernel upgrade was also undertaken to take advantage of 64-bit processing. This will position us to offer enhanced capabilities to our core equalizing platform, without sacrificing speed and response times.

In previous releases, as we moved to multi-core hardware, we have split out key processes across cores, so that equalizing does not have to compete with other processing. With this 64-bit processing release, we will see increased speed for all processes across all cores.

Remember, Software Updates are available for free to customers with valid NetEqualizer Software & Support (NSS) – the NDI setup, however, has an initial fee.

At this time, most customers likely DO NOT need to update to 7.0 unless you are interested in NDI and/or are a NE4000-10G customer who needs faster performance.

For more notes on this Software Update, check out our release notes.

The Wireless Density Problem

By Art Reisman – CTO – APconnections

Recently, we have been involved in several projects where an IT consulting company has attempted to bring public wireless service into a high density arena. So far, the jury is out on how effective these service offerings have fared.

The motivation for such a project is driven by several factors.

1) Most standard cellular 4G data coverage is generally not adequate to handle 20,000 people with iPhones in a packed arena. I am sure the larger carriers are also feverishly working on a solution, but I have no inside information as to their approach nor chance of success.

Note: I’d be interested to learn about any arenas with great coverage…

Poem Of The Month

To the tune of “Imagine” – by John Lennon

Imagine there’s no congestion
It’s easy if you try
No hidden fees surprise us
Above us high speed guy
Imagine all providers, giving bandwidth away

Imagine there’s no quotas
It isn’t hard to use
No killer apps that die for
A lack of bandwidth too

Imagine all the gamers living Layer-7 free
You may say, I’m a streamer
But I’m just gonna download one
I hope some day you’ll join us
And your speed concerns will be done

How Much Bandwidth Do You Really Need?

By Art Reisman – CTO – APconnections

When it comes to how much money to spend on the Internet, there seems to be this underlying feeling of guilt with everybody I talk to. From ISPs, to libraries or multinational corporations, they all have a feeling of bandwidth inadequacy. It is very similar to the guilt I used to feel back in College when I would skip my studies for some social activity (drinking). Only now it applies to bandwidth contention ratios. Everybody wants to know how they compare with the industry average in their sector. Are they spending on bandwidth appropriately, and if not, are they hurting their institution, will they become second-rate?

To ease the pain, I was hoping to put a together a nice chart on industry standard recommendations, validating that your bandwidth consumption was normal, and I just can’t bring myself to do it quite yet. There is this elephant in the room that we must contend with. So before I make up a nice chart on recommendations, a more relevant question is… how bad do you want your video service to be?

Your choices are:

  1. bad
  2. crappy
  3. downright awful

Although my answer may seem a bit sarcastic, there is a truth behind these choices. I sense that much of the guilt of our customers trying to provision bandwidth is based on the belief that somebody out there has enough bandwidth to reach some form of video Shangri-La; like playground children bragging about their father’s professions, claims of video ecstasy are somewhat exaggerated…

art_smallIn February, our thoughts turn to love and friendship. Valentine’s Day is coming up this week, a great day to celebrate those in your life that you love. So this month we celebrate you, our customers!

This Newsletter is our valentine to you! As candy is fattening, we are instead fattening up your mind. Our gifts to you include an opportunity to participate in our AD Beta Test, a chance to learn more about the history of P2P, and the opportunity to pick up some bling at Educause!

We love it when we hear back from you – so if you have a story you would like to share with us of how we have helped you, let us know. Email me directly at art@apconnections.net. I would love to hear from you!

AD Integration Update and Beta Testing

We are well underway with beta testing our new and exciting NetEqualizer feature – Active Directory integration. The feature is being broken down into two release phases:

In the first phase, we’ll allow administrators to see the Active Directory username associated with the IP Address in the connection table (assuming the user used Active Directory to authenticate). We’ll also allow you to sort the table by username and IP for quick analysis of a specific username.

This screenshot shows how usernames will be displayed in the connection table:

ad

In the second phase, which will be released in the summer of 2013, we’ll allow administrators to set rate limits by username as well as give priority to certain users. This way, users don’t have to be part of a certain subnet to gain priority access.

If your organization uses Active Directory for user authentication, you have had a NetEqualizer for at least one year, and you’d be willing to assist us in our testing, let us know by sending an email to:

sales@apconnections.net

Stay tuned to NetEqualizer News for more updates and GA release details!

Maximizing Your Internet Resource: Why Behavior-Based QoS Is the Future of Bandwidth Shaping

Higher education is tasked to do more with less, particularly when managing a scarce resource like bandwidth. Behavior-based QoS, an affordable bandwidth shaping technology, is coming to the forefront. It’s also gaining mindshare as a superior bandwidth shaping technology, as encrypted traffic thwarts deep packet inspection. This poster will delve into the differences between DPI and behavior-based QoS, explaining where each is best suited for networks. Learn how to reduce P2P and HEOA/RIAA requests on your campus and see behavior-based QoS in action.

We will offer a live online demonstration of our affordable NetEqualizer:

We hope to see you there!

Don’t Forget to Upgrade to 6.0!

With a brief tutorial on our Dashboard

If you have not already upgraded your NetEqualizer to Software Update 6.0, now is the perfect time! We have discussed the new upgrade in depth in previous newsletters and blog posts, so this month we thought we’d show you how to take advantage of our new Dashboard features!

If you have not explored it, here is what you can expect to see:

– You can immediately tell which key processes are running, through our green (on)/red (off) icons. This helps you to make sure that everything is running as expected.
– You can Run Diagnostics directly by clicking on the icon at the top right of the Dashboard.
– You can see how much bandwidth is being consumed both from the Internet (% Bandwidth Down) and to the Internet (% Bandwidth Up). One great side affect of this is that you can tell if your cables are set-up correctly too. Typically, Bandwidth Down is much higher than Bandwidth Up.  If you see the opposite, you should consider reversing your cables. Contact our Support Team if you have questions.
– You can quickly see what version you are running, which will help you to determine if you need to upgrade.  You can always see what is available in each software update on our blog by clicking on the Software Updates page.
– If you are using Pools to limit bandwidth, you can select which Pool to view the Pool Traffic Up and Pool Traffic Down.To keep the Dashboard relevant and clean, we limit what we show there. However, we are open to suggestions! If there are other key items that you think warrant Dashboard status, let us know. Just send an email with your ideas to:

A Brief History of Peer to Peer File Sharing and the Attempts to Block It

By Art Reisman – CTO – APconnections

The following history is based on my notes and observations as both a user of peer to peer, and as a network engineer tasked with cleaning it up.

Round One, Napster, Centralized Server, Circa 2002

Napster was a centralized service, unlike the peer to peer behemoths of today there was never any question of where the copyrighted material was being stored and pirated from. Even though Napster did not condone pirated music and movies on their site, the courts decided by allowing copyrighted material to exist on their servers, they were in violation of copyright law. Napster’s days of free love were soon over…

A Slower Pace

When people picture the state of Texas, most think of vast ranches, cattle, and cactus. While much of the state does resemble this type of landscape, the northeastern part is actually heavily wooded and contains many lakes. Life in this rural area of the country moves a bit slower than our high-speed, high-tech lives in Metro Denver, Colorado. Sometimes it is cathartic to put all the work aside for a bit and just stare off into the woods.

Coming Soon: Faster NetEqualizer Platforms

We’re constantly trying to keep our units up-to-date and on the forefront of bandwidth shaping technology. In support of this mission, 2013 will see the retirement of the NE2000 as a new unit. Current NE2000 customers, do not fear. We will continue to support and develop updates for NE2000 boxes just like we will for the new units.

The lowest throughput license will now be 20 Mbps and the -20 and -50 units will be moved to the NE3000 platform. This will provide faster processing to users at these bandwidth levels and will ensure that our hardware is kept inline with industry advances.

NetGladiator Hacking Challenge: Case Study

We’ve had a good amount of interest in our Hacking Challenge since we launched the proposal a few months ago. One recent assessment effectively illustrated the need for third-party security checks by a security expert:

This particular application had done a good job overall of putting protections in place. SQL characters were blocked in login pages and web forms, Javascript in the URL was properly removed and encoded, SSL was used to transmit data, etc.

While it appeared the application was good to go, near the end of the assessment our security experts discovered a hole that eventually led to full compromise of the site. It turns out that the registration form did not properly block SQL characters from all entries. While the freeform text fields did block SQL characters, drop down menus like State and Country did not.

Because of this one lapse in protection, the entire database schema was discoverable, which led to the database content being saved and downloaded. This then led to user password compromise of an administrator account which resulted in super user access to the administration area. Luckily, this was all part of the Hacking Challenge, so no actual harm occurred!

This example goes to show how important a third-party audit is. Even when precautions are taken, all it takes is one vulnerability to completely compromise a site.

Take our Hacking Challenge today!

Coming Soon: New Features for NetEqualizer

We’ll soon be releasing new features for NetEqualizer.

Our commitment to continuous feature development supports our goal of providing as much value as possible to our customers. Here are some sneak peaks of new features coming soon:

Bandwidth Control on the Public Side of a NAT Router (Port-based Equalizing)

We have done some significant work in our upcoming release with respect to managing network traffic from the outside of private network segments. The bottom line is we can now accomplish sophisticated bandwidth optimizations for segments of large networks hidden behind NAT routers.

One basic problem with a generic bandwidth controller is that they typically treat all users behind a NAT router as one user. Coming soon, we will shape not only on IP address, but on an IP/Port combination, so that we can optimize connections even in heavily NAT’d networks.

For more information on this approach, check out this blog article.

Active Directory Integration

For customers that use Microsoft Active Directory in their organizations, we have added the ability to correlate IP addresses to user names. This will help administrators view the user names associated with IPs in the Active Connections table and more easily enforce and analyze bandwidth usage.

We are currently looking for beta testers for this feature. If you have Active Directory and are interested in participating in the Beta, send an email to sales@apconnections.net.

Remember, new releases (aka “software updates) including all the new features described above, are available for free to customers with valid NetEqualizer Software & Support (NSS).

If you are not current with NSS, contact us today!

Wireless is Nice, But Wired Networks are Here to Stay

By Art Reisman – CTO – APconnections

The trend to go all wireless in high density housing was seemingly a slam dunk just a few years ago. The driving forces behind the exclusive deployment of wireless over wired access was two fold.

  • Wireless cost savings. It is much less expensive to strafe a building with a mesh network  rather than to pay a contractor to insert RJ45 cable throughout the building.
  • People expect wireless. Nobody plugs a computer into the wall anymore – or do they?

Something happened on the way to wireless Shangri-La. The physical limitations of wireless, combined with the appetite for ever-increasing video, have caused some high density housing operators to rethink their positions…

artdaughterThis month’s picture is from Parent’s Night for my daughter’s volleyball team. In December, as I get ready for the Holidays, I often think about what is important to me – like family, friends, my health, and how I help to run this business. While pondering these thoughts, I came up with some quotes that have meaning to me, which I am sharing here. I hope you enjoy them, or that they at least get you thinking about what is important to you!

“Technology is not what has already been done.”
“Following too closely ruins the journey.”
“Innovation is not a democratic endeavor.”
“Time is not linear, it just appears that way most of the time.”

What are your favorite quotes? We love it when we hear back from you – so if you have a quote or a story you would like to share with us of how we have helped you, let us know. Email me directly at art@apconnections.net. I would love to hear from you!

NetEqualizer: Coming in 2013

We are always looking to improve our NetEqualizer product line such that our customers are getting maximum value from their purchase. Part of this process is brainstorming changes and additional features to adapt and help meet that need.

Here are a couple of ideas for changes to NetEqualizer that will arrive in 2013. Stay tuned to NetEqualizer News and our blog for updates on these features!

1) NetEqualizer in Mesh Networks and Cloud Computing

As the use of NAT distributed across mesh networks becomes more widespread, and the bundling of services across cloud computing becomes more prevalent, our stream-based behavior shaping will need to evolve.

This is due to the fact that we base our decision of whether or not to shape on a pair of IP addresses talking to each other without considering port numbers. Sometimes, in cloud or mesh networks, services are trunked across a tunnel using the same IP address. As they cross the trunk, the streams are broken out appropriately based on port number.

So, for example, say you have a video server as part of a cloud computing environment. Without any NAT, on a wide-open network, we would be able to give that video server priority simply by knowing its IP address. However, in a meshed network, the IP connection might be the same as other streams, and we’d have no way to differentiate it. It turns out, though, that services within a tunnel may share IP addresses, but the differentiating factor will be the port number.

Thus, in 2013 we will no longer shape just on IP to IP, but will evolve to offer shaping on IP(Port) to IP(Port). The result will be quality of service improvements even in heavily NAT’d environments.

2) 10 Gbps Line Speeds without Degradation

Some of our advantages over the years have been our price point, the techniques we use on standard hardware, and the line speeds we can maintain.

Right now, our NE3000 and above products all have true multi-core processors, and we want to take advantage of that to enhance our packet analysis. While our analysis is very quick and efficient today (sustained speeds of 1 Gbps up and down), in very high-speed networks, multi-core processing will amp up our throughput even more. In order to get to 10 Gbps on our Intel-based architecture, we must do some parallel analysis on IP packets in the Linux kernel.

The good news is that we’ve already developed this technology in our NetGladiator product (check out this blog article here).

Coming in 2013, we’ll port this technology to NetEqualizer. The result will be low-cost bandwidth shapers that can handle extremely high line speeds without degradation. This is important because in a world where bandwidth keeps getting cheaper, the only reason to invest in an optimizer is if it makes good business sense.

We have prided ourselves on smart, efficient, optimization techniques for years – and we will continue to do that for our customers!

Secure Your Web Applications for the Holidays!

We want YOU to be proactive about security. If your business has external-facing web applications, don’t wait for an attack to happen – protect yourself now! It only takes a few hours of our in-house security experts’ time to determine if your site might have issues, so, for the Holidays, we are offering a $500 upfront security assessment for customers with web applications that need testing!

If it is determined that our NetGladiator product can help shore up your issues, that $500 will be applied toward your first year of NetGladiator Software & Support (GSS). We also offer further consulting based on that assessment on an as-needed basis.

Don’t Forget to Upgrade to 6.0!: With a brief tutorial on User Quotas

If you have not already upgraded your NetEqualizer to Software Update 6.0, now is the perfect time!

We have discussed the new upgrade in depth in previous newsletters and blog posts, so this month we thought we’d show you how to take advantage of one of the new features – User Quotas.

User quotas are great if you need to track bandwidth usage over time per IP address or subnet. You can also send alerts to notify you if a quota has been surpassed.

To begin, you’ll want to navigate to the Manage User Quotas menu on the left. You’ll then want to start the Quota System using the third interface from the top, Start/Stop Quota System.

Now that the Quota System is turned on, we’ll add a new quota. Click on Configure User Quotas and take a look at the first window:

quota1

Here are the settings associated with setting up a new quota rule:

Host IP: Enter in the Host IP or Subnet that you want to give a quota rule to.

Quota Amount: Enter in the number of total bytes for this quota to allow.

Duration: Enter in the number of minutes you want the quota to be tracked for before it is reset (1 day, 1 week, etc.).

Hard Limit Restriction: Enter in the number of bytes/sec to allow the user once the quota is surpassed.

Contact: Enter in a contact email for the person to notify when the quota is passed.

After you populate the form, click Add Rule. Congratulations! You’ve just set up your first quota rule!

From here, you can view reports on your quota users and more.

Remember, the new GUI and all the new features of Software Update 6.0 are available for free to customers with valid NetEqualizer Software & Support (NSS).

If you don’t have the new GUI or are not current with NSS, contact us today!

Internet User’s Bill of Rights

By Art Reisman – CTO – APconnections

This is the second article in our series. Our first was a Bill of Rights dictating the etiquette of software updates. We continue with a proposed Bill of Rights for consumers with respect to their Internet service.

1) Providers must divulge the contention ratio of their service.

At the core of all Internet service is a balancing act between the number of people that are sharing a resource and how much of that resource is available.

For example, a typical provider starts out with a big pipe of Internet access that is shared via exchange points with other large providers. They then subdivide this access out to their customers in ever smaller chunks – perhaps starting with a gigabit exchange point and then narrowing down to a 10 megabit local pipe that is shared with customers across a subdivision or area of town.

The speed you, the customer, can attain is limited to how many people might be sharing that 10 megabit local pipe at any one time. If you are promised one megabit service, it is likely that your provider would have you share your trunk with more than 10 subscribers and take advantage of the natural usage behavior, which assumes that not all users are active at one time.

The exact contention ratio will vary widely from area to area, but from experience, your provider will want to maximize the number of subscribers who can share the pipe, while minimizing service complaints due to a slow network. In some cases, I have seen as many as 1,000 subscribers sharing 10 megabits. This is a bit extreme, but even with a ratio as high as this, subscribers will average much faster speeds when compared to dial up…

Midwest Technical Seminar – What We Learned: Why NetEqualizer may be the killer application for those stubborn wireless dead spots

We had a great day meeting with customers at our latest Technical Seminar, held recently at the beautiful Washington University campus in St. Louis.

While the primary purpose of these meetings is to impart technical knowledge to customers, we love that we get to learn a lot too. Here are two major takeaways from this seminar:

1) NetEqualizer may be the killer application for those stubborn wireless dead spots: One of our major discussions during the meeting surrounded wireless access points and inevitable dead spots – despite spending countless hours adding and placing AP’s. This is a common problem for situations in which additional users are flooding the network. It turns out that NetEqualizer may be the best way to get rid of the issue. Check out our blog article on improving wireless network quality:

More Ideas on How to Improve Wireless Network Quality

2) Layer 7 shaping is dead: The effectiveness of Layer 7 shaping as a method to arbitrate bandwidth in the future was also discussed. As encrypted traffic over SSL becomes the norm, traditional Layer 7 approaches are becoming more and more useless. In order to remain a viable solution, Layer 7 shaping providers are having customers install decryption modules so that traffic can be analyzed. There are multiple issues with this approach, which we have detailed in this blog article:

Layer 7 Application Shaping Dying with Increased SSL

Thanks to everyone who came out for our seminar, and stay tuned to NetEqualizer News for details about our Technical Seminar!

Wired Bandwidth Prices, and What to Expect in the Future

By Art Reisman – CTO – APconnections

Editor’s note: This article is an opinion piece. Do you have your own ideas about this topic? Email me, or comment on our blog!

Bandwidth prices traditionally have a very regional component, and your experience may vary, but in the US there is a really good chance you can get quite a bit more bandwidth for a much lower price than what it would have cost you a few years ago.

To site one example, we have a customer that contracts Internet services to supply several large residential housing units. Currently, commercial class business Internet service for 50 megabits runs $120 per month, which is the same price they were paying for 10 megabits 3 years ago…

Colors of Fall

During the transition from fall to winter, the trees in Colorado undergo a beautiful transformation. Within a few weeks, they will have gone from summer green, to yellow, orange, and red, before eventually falling off until spring.
